We demonstrate that an external‐cavity‐grating‐based wavelength tunable laser (WTL) can successfully operate at a stable power level with ellipticity and degree of polarization (DOP) under control. The variation range of the DOP can be improved from 65% to 15%. The ellipticity fluctuation can also be reduced by 30° in order to achieve high polarization quality for a wavelength tunable laser (WTL) source. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
