A wideband compact microstrip antenna is designed using the method of moments (MoM) and experimentally evaluated. The VSWR bandwidth of the antenna is more than 90%, while its gain is above 2 dBi. The mechanism of operation of the antenna is also explained. The main advantage of this antenna is its wide impedance bandwidth. The limitation of the design is that the beam direction varies with frequency in the upper part of the bandwidth. This makes the antenna only suitable for wireless communication in a multipath environment. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
