Starting from the frequency‐independent antenna theory, the geometrical features and electrical properties of the exponentially tapered slot‐line antenna (ETSA) are studied as a basis for the design of Vivaldi antennas. A detailed analysis of the antenna current is made and verified by several simulations performed using the NEC2 code. The results are in good agreement with the theoretical conclusions and can be viewed as being basic to the development of a more systematic approach to the design of the aforesaid antennas. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
