A novel balun structure with a composite right–left‐handed transmission line (CRLH‐TL) is proposed. A microstrip implementation of the left‐handed transmission line (LH‐TL) and the equivalent‐circuit model for the CRLH‐TL are presented and the related parameters of the circuit are given. Utilizing the advanced phase‐shift characteristics of CRLH‐TL and combining the traditional right‐handed transmission line (RH‐TL) with the CRLH‐TL, the design process of the balun becomes much easier and simpler. The novel balun structure operating at the center frequency 2.4 GHz with low loss and a wide frequency band is illustrated in detail. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
