Simple folded‐patch antennas fed by an L‐shape probe are designed and studied experimentally. This simple antenna structure with thick air substrate attains a projection‐length reduction of about 30% with reference to the conventional half‐wave patch antenna. This antenna attains an impedance bandwidth of 35% and a gain of 6 dBi. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
