A class of novel compact filters with quasi‐hairpin structure using stepped‐impedance resonators (SIRs) is presented. The SIR open stub is used as the loaded structure for the filter design with the merit of small size and sharp transition band (TB). Additionally, these filters achieve sharp TB for lowpass filters (LPFs) and improved selectivity for bandpass filters (BPFs) at 2.45 GHz. All of the filters retain the dimensions of the circuit by more than 60%, as compared to the conventional one. These filters are very useful for applications in wireless‐communication systems. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
