The poles of the electric field inside a slab with negative permittivity and negative permeability are analyzed. The theoretical solution shows that there is a pole on the integral path which moves toward infinity along the imaginary k z axis as the permittivity and permeability both approach the real value of −1. The surface plasmon wave and the resolution ability of the slab are shown to be determined by this pole. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
