A theoretical analysis and experimental study of the strain effect upon a chirped fiber Bragg grating's (CFBG's) wavelength, 3‐dB bandwidth, reflectivity, dispersion, time‐delay ripple, polarization‐mode dispersion (PMD) and so on is presented. The strain effect includes both the exterior stress placed on the CFBG, and the inner stress placed on the photosensitive fiber before CFBG fabrication. Some useful results are obtained, which will provide helpful guidance for the application of CFBG. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
