A new type of one‐cell slow‐wave electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) microstrip is introduced. It is an impedance transformer applied as a λ/4 matching line between two different impedances. Two cases are explained: (i) a simulated and realized T‐junction between three 50Ω lines and (ii) a simulated λ/4 transformer between 50Ω and 12.5Ω. These EBG structures are realized without etching in the ground plane. Reduction of the length of the proposed λ/4 line is 60% (or higher), compared to the conventional λ/4 matching line. For the realized example, the agreement obtained between the simulated and measured results is excellent. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
