A novel hybrid defected ground structure (DGS), which interleaves a photonic bandgap structure (PBGS), is investigated theoretically as well as experimentally. It yields distinct multiple passbands and stopbands. The novel structure can be used either a compact diplexer or a dual stopband filter. With Chebyshev distributions on the interleaved PBGS, the passband and stopband performances improve significantly. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
