A new and novel type of gain‐clamped erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is characterized the using conventional amplified spontaneous emission interpolation (ASE‐I) method and the relatively new time‐domain extinction (TDE) technique. The performance difference resulting from the measurement technique gives a gain deviation of 1.3 and 1.8 dB and noise‐figure deviation of 0.8 and 1.3 dB for 1550.9‐nm and 1553.3‐nm input‐signal wavelengths, respectively. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
