The full‐vectorial finite‐element‐based imaginary‐distance beam‐propagation method (IDVFEBPM) is applied to perform modal analysis of lossless and lossy microwave dielectric waveguides. The excellent agreement between the results obtained using the IDVFEBPM and those in the literature reveal its high numerical precision. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
