Dynamic gain fluctuations in a ring‐laser gain‐clamped EDFA submitted to WDM traffic fluctuations are experimentally investigated. We measured the effect of relaxation oscillations that build up with laser action upon the BER on a 10‐Gb/s optical transmission. Power penalties up to 1 dB are observed for resonant‐traffic fluctuations. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
