A compact ultra‐wideband ground‐penetrating radar (UWB GPR) using an impulse waveform is developed. A proper impulse generator is designed and then a novel compact UWB monopole antenna is developed for transmitting the impulse and receiving the reflected signals. For visualization of buried targets, image processing is performed. For verification, a UWB GPR prototype is built. The experimental results show that the system has very good depth and spatial resolution. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
