A novel tunable frequency‐selective surface (FSS) filter configuration that can simultaneously block both vertical and horizontal polarizations is proposed. It consists of dipole elements tuned by low‐cost varactor diodes that are biased by multilayer grids. Single and series‐pair diode implementations are presented. The filter's tunable performance is demonstrated numerically and experimentally at around 2.45 GHz. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
