In this paper, an easy design method is introduced for the optimal linear array, that is, the array with the highest possible gain. This technique is only exact for isotropically radiating elements, but can easily be used for an array of any element type with a rotation‐symmetric radiation pattern. The quality of this approximation is discussed for an array of dipoles. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
