The conflict between the good coding performance and high reflectivity of the superstructure fiber Bragg grating (SSFBG) en/decoder for coherent optical code division multiple access (OCDMA) is analyzed in this paper. Apodization along grating length is proposed for solving this problem for the first time. By using a simple feedback‐searching procedure, an apodization profile for a 15‐chip SSFBG is successfully generated and high reflectivity and a high P/W ratio are exhibited simultaneously. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
