A novel, compact, rectangular increasing‐distance spiral‐slot (RIDSS) structure is proposed for photonic band‐gap (PBG) applications. The dimension of the RIDSS structure is only about 1/8λ at the cutoff frequency. Only three cells of the RIDSS‐PBG are sufficient for the measured beyond the 20‐dB stopband from 1470 to 2034 MHz, thus rendering the whole structure super‐compact. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
