Abstract In the design process of array antennas, coupling is one of the most important elements to be considered. The real feeding‐radiated coefficients can be quite different from the theoretical ones because of this effect. In this paper, a characterization method is presented that allows each element to be matched from the array. All the parameters of the array‐coupling model are obtained through the measurement of scattering parameters and radiation patterns. Two practical applications for a linear patch array are presented. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
