The co‐directional coupling between two photonic band gap (PBG) waveguides is studied. The designs of PBG waveguide couplers with different lattice arrangements are presented and their coupling characteristics are studied. Further, their application in the design of ultra‐short optical multiplexer de‐multiplexers (MUX‐DEMUXs) has been investigated. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
