In this paper, we study the size effects of an H‐shaped defected ground structure (DGS) cell upon the characteristic impedance of a microstrip line, by using a simple circuit‐analysis method. An LC model of an equivalent circuit can represent the proposed H‐shaped DGS cell. It is found that the characteristic impedance of a 50Ω microstrip line can be controlled easily in a wide range by using the H‐shaped DGS cell. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
