A novel low‐profile planar metal‐plate monopole antenna suitable for digital television (DTV) signal reception in the UHF band for laptops or portable computers is presented. The proposed antenna is a tab‐shaped planar monopole with a low profile of 46 mm (about 9% of the wavelength at 600 MHz) and shows a wide operating bandwidth (2.5:1 VSWR) of 262 MHz (larger than 40% centered at about 600 MHz). When in operation, the proposed antenna protrudes from the top edge of the supporting metal frame of the laptop display. When not in operation, owing to its planar structure, the proposed antenna is suitable to be retracted back inside the laptop casing behind the display.
