A pair of modulators is used to generate a return‐to‐zero (RZ) optical‐data stream. Dither signals and a microwave power‐detection module are used for error‐signal generation and detection, respectively. The relation between error signal and pulse misalignment is explicitly given. Prototypes are built to validate the design concept of the high‐speed pulse‐alignment control loop. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
