A Van Atta, retro‐directive, slot‐antenna array on a cylindrical laminate is designed for use at 3.25 GHz. The array comprises four slots in a line, engraved on the front side of the laminate; the interconnecting microstrip feed lines are on the backside. Radiation patterns of the array are determined by FDTD calculations as well as measurements. The monostatic RCS of the array, compared to an all‐copper surface of the same size and shape as the cylindrical laminate, can be enhanced by 5 to 20 dB if the polar angle of the backscattering direction is in the range 20°–55°. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
