Dielectric posts are often used to support a conducting patch above the air‐ground. The capacitance formula for such posts is derived. Analysis is tackled by considering the characteristics of a parallel‐plate capacitor separated and supported by dielectric posts. In our formulation, the novel technique of synthetic asymptotes developed by Chow 1–3 is used. The calculated results are compared to the computed results from the commercial software Maxwell and are found to agree to 2% on average. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
