This paper presents a new approach based on multilayer perceptron networks to determine the 3 rd ‐order intermodulation distortion levels in microwave‐intensity‐modulated GaAIAs laser diodes. The Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm is used to train the network. The results obtained from the network are in excellent agreement with the experimental results reported elsewhere. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
