The definitive element of any wireless device is its antenna. In this paper, a multiband planar inverted‐F antenna (PIFA) is miniaturized. The results show that a 68%–82% size reduction can be achieved. Two techniques for reduction are utilized: (i) adding lumped load and (ii) miniaturizing the geometry by using the fractal concept. New PIFA configurations are reached. Quad‐band operation is achieved. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
