Abstract Mutual coupling between two planar inverted‐F antennas (PIFAs) based on a ground plane is studied numerically and experimentally. Several arrangements of collinear, orthogonal, and parallel PIFA elements with interelement spacing ranging from 0.1λ to 0.9λ are examined at the design frequency of 2.45 GHz, and in the 2.0–3.0‐GHz frequency band. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
