In this paper, we propose a novel structure for an ultra‐compact wavelength demultiplexer with an index‐modulation (IM) region incorporated into a multimode interference coupler. The device length can be reduced by using asymmetric output ports and the performance of this device has been enhanced by changing the phase within the region. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
