A hybrid scheme combining Gaussian beam (GB) and physical optics (PO) approaches is presented for an efficient analysis of reflector antennas with tapered‐impedance edge boundaries. The reflecting surface is divided into an interior portion with uniform impedance and a smooth boundary, where the GB approach can be employed, and an exterior portion of tapered impedance, which is analyzed by the PO approach. The high efficiency of the GB analysis potentially accelerates the entire analysis, as compared with the case in which only PO is employed. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
