A technique for facial‐image recognition, based on the nonzero‐order joint‐transform correlator constructed with liquid‐crystal spatial light modulators (LCSLMs), is introduced. The method of Lagrange multipliers is utilized to design the reference function. We also add some noise in training images to investigate the performance. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
