We present a novel method to fabricate fiber filters based on mechanically induced long‐period fiber gratings. Transmission spectra can be tailored by external pressures or by introducing a phase‐shift. As an example, the filter was used to flatten the spectral output from an Er‐doped superfluorescent fiber source. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
