A novel broadband patch antenna with an equilateral‐triangular cavity ground for achieving enhanced antenna gain over a large bandwidth is presented. A constructed prototype covering the 5.2/5.8‐GHz (5150–5350/5725–5875 GHz) WLAN bands and showing a high antenna‐gain level of about 9.8 dBi is demonstrated. Across the operating band, the prototype also shows good radiation characteristics with reduced cross‐polarization and backward radiation. Details of the proposed antenna design and obtained experimental results are presented. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
