Abstract A new high‐gain Erbium‐doped fiber amplifier configured in a dual‐stage triple‐pass amplification scheme is presented. The first‐stage amplifier consists of double‐pass amplification in order to obtain high gain, while the second‐stage amplifier is single‐pass amplification. The optimum pump ratio of the first‐stage pump laser to the total pump power is found to be 30%. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
