The direct and inverse problems of electromagnetic scattering by cylindrical structures with arbitrary cross sections for E‐polarized line sources are considered. It is shown that the method of lines gives a computationally efficient and accurate procedure for calculating the scattering amplitude. The developed procedure also enables one to determine shape of cylindrical structures form scattering amplitudes. To illustrate the procedure and its computational performance, two numerical examples are presented. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
