A low‐loss wide‐angle Y‐junction with graded‐index optical waveguides which can change the optical propagation direction, is proposed. The optical power is divided equally into two branching waveguides with a wide angle. Device performance is examined numerically by the finite‐difference beam propagation method (FDBPM). The simulated results show that the output optical power can be more than 96%, even if a branching angle is as large as 53.1°. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
