A novel L‐band fiber amplifier comprised of two sections of erbium‐doped fiber (EDF) and an optical reflector is used to enhance power‐conversion efficiency (PCE). We also examine how an optical amplifier can be used without an optical reflector while nonetheless making effective use of amplified spontaneous emission in order to increase the gain. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
