The extinction ratio, switching contrast, and amplitude modulation (AM) characteristics of a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) as an all‐optical add–drop multiplexer (AO–ADM) are analyzed. It shows that the switching performance can be improved by optimizing the splitting ratio of the couplers and the relative small‐signal gain of the two SOAs. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
