With the use of a folded radiating patch and an L ‐strip capacitively coupled feed, a novel compact patch antenna suitable for a DCS (1710–1880 MHz) cellular system base‐station application is presented. Owing to the folded radiating patch used, the patch length in the excitation direction can be greatly reduced by more than 30% compared to the case with a conventional radiating patch. Many prototypes have been constructed, and the experimental results are presented. The effects of the folded radiating patch on the antenna's radiation characteristics are also discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 31: 60–62, 2001.
