This paper presents a novel photonic bandgap (PBG) structure of unequal orthogonal periods and its application to a dual‐band rectangular microstrip antenna for performance enhancement. The two operating frequencies of the dual‐band microstrip antenna studied have orthogonal polarization planes, and by using the proposed PBG ground plane with its periods in orthogonal directions determined from the two separate operating frequencies, gain enhancements of 1.7 and 1.1 dBi have been obtained for the lower and upper operating frequencies, respectively. Details of the PBG structure studied are described, and the obtained experimental results are presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 30: 280–283, 2001.
