Applying the matrix transformation, the wavelength‐transmission characteristics of the N × N arrayed waveguide grating multiplexer are analyzed. These wavelength‐transmission characteristics include multiplexing, demultiplexing, wavelength routing, and optical path add and drop multiplexing. The analysis plays an important role in using an AWG multiplexer for a wavelength division multiplexing system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 30: 249–252, 2001.
