This work presents a wideband millimeter‐wave matching technique between active devices with very small impedances and conventionally used antennas. The matching section is an optically controlled microstrip‐taper line. Impedance transformation from 75 to 6.5 Ω is gradually obtained with minimum reflections and losses. The average transmitted power is more than 80%. The terminal impedance can be controlled by the power of the laser source, optical wavelength, or by changing the lifetime of the semiconductor substrate. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
