In this paper, we introduce a one‐dimensional (1‐D) microstrip photonic bandgap (PBG) filter with only one bandgap (without harmonic response) and without etching in the ground plane. The structure has a sinusoidal variation of the characteristic impedance as a function of the length of the microstrip line. Three examples of the proposed filter are presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 29: 418–420, 2001.
