A novel method to improve the performance of 10‐Gb/s directly modulated laser (DML) transmission along single‐mode fiber (SMF) in a metro‐area network (MAN) is proposed. It is demonstrated that by adapting the filter with a special central frequency shift and suitable bandwidth, the dispersion power penalty can be effectively reduced. A distance limit of 10 Gb/s DML along SMF is extended to 51 km in simulation and elementary experiment. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
