This paper proposes a novel, less expensive optical‐fiber Raman amplifier, which employs equally spaced low‐power laser diodes as pumps. The genetic algorithm (GA) is modified to optimize the configuration of the pumps. Simulation results show that, for operation in the bandwidth from 1530 to 1610 nm, the amplifier provides a gain profile of small in‐band ripple and sharp out‐of‐band roll off. About 20% of pump power can be saved. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 40: 124–127, 2004; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
