A new design of a low‐profile metal‐plate antenna suitable for vehicular application in the 900‐MHz band covering the AMPS (824–894 MHz) and GSM (880–960 MHz) bands is presented. The proposed antenna is easily constructed by folding a long rectangular metal plate into a symmetrical configuration with two back‐to‐back inverted‐L arms, and has a low profile of 22 mm (about 0.066λ at 900 MHz) above the ground plane. In addition, the antenna shows a very good conical radiation pattern with omnidirectional radiation in the azimuthal plane. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
