The relationship between the amplifier input‐return loss (IRL) and the termination at the input of the active device is investigated and a useful expression relating the IRL to the available gain of the transistor is derived. Using such a relation, new charts for microwave amplifier design, which allow a direct tradeoff among often contrasting specifications, are generated. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
