This paper presents a new photonic bandgap (PBG) structure with a coplanar waveguide (CPW). The use of slots on the ground prohibits the propagation of the quasi‐TEM mode along the CPW line and provides the two characteristics of stopband periodicity and slot‐depth dependency of the stopband position. We implement two PBG structures which exhibit good performance with compact size. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
