Nonsymmetric Vernier type series‐coupled optical microring filters have been found to be free of the spurious responses that commonly occur in those of symmetric design. Large free spectral range (FSR) is obtained without significant decrease of the waveguide‐bending radius. The tradeoff between coupling coefficients, filter bandwidth, and the suppression of interstitial resonances has been investigated. Results on filter sensitivity to waveguide and coupler loss are also reported. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
