A novel structure of broadband microstrip antennas, termed the SGMFP antenna, is proposed. It is consisted of a slot in the ground plane, a microstrip feedline supported on a substrate, a foam layer, and a patch. It can achieve broad bandwidth and high polarisation purity. By using a single patch, two design examples are provided, which achieves a bandwidth (S 11 < −10 dB) of 23.7% and 20.3%, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
